Born to Be Wild tells the extraordinary tale of two extraordinary women on opposite sides of the globe--devoting their lives to saving, and reintroducing into the wilderness, orphaned wild animals. Anyone who loves nature, animals, or amazing stories of making a difference on this small planet will love Born to Be Wild, a family film to appeal to every age. The documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, is absolutely stunning in its visuals and in its simple, yet profound, intertwined stories. In Kenya, Daphne Sheldrick runs an elephant orphanage outside Tsavo National Park. For decades she has rescued baby elephants whose mothers have been poached, and rehabilitated them, along with an amazing team of caretakers, for eventual reintroduction into the wild. Biruté Galdikas, meanwhile, runs a rescue organization in Borneo for baby orangutans, orphaned when their parents die as the rain forest they need to survive is razed. Born to Be Wild intertwines the story of each remarkable woman--Sheldrick, elegant in pearls while she feeds her elephants, and Galdikas, bonding with the baby orangutans while being careful not to interfere with their "wild" indoctrination. The film is reminiscent of Born Free and of the online video story of Christian the lion, who bonded with his human caretakers and remembered them years after being reintroduced to the wild. The deep knowledge and understanding that each woman brings to her adopted species of choice is impressive, and so is the commitment of each. And the cinematography--being up close and personal with true wildness--is breathtaking all on its own. Born to Be Wild is moving and a must-see for all animal lovers. --A.T. Hurley
